2024 Multicultural Children's Book Day Book Review

Read to Me

Kyra Teis, Artist

Board Book – Multiracial Child or Family

Published in 2004 by Star Bright Books

I was gifted a copy of Read to Me by Star Bright Books, an independent children’s books publishing company in Cambridge, MA. The opinions expressed of my review of Read to Me are purely and solely my own.

The beautiful story is told in gentle rhyming verse and the illustrations are vibrant and cheerful. They depict multicultural families of all ages enjoying reading a book to children. There are grandparents, and mothers and fathers reading to babies and toddlers, as well as young children enjoying reading a book together.

Read to Me is a true testament that books are for everyone, and that reading should be introduced to children as early as possible so that they can learn to enjoy and appreciate not just the words they will learn, but the stories the books tell.

Books such as Read to Me helps to unite families of all cultures and languages. It will engage a conversation of family traditions and histories. This book, I later learned, is also available in other languages, including Spanish.

The illustrations in Read to Me affirm what the story tells, “That books are meant to be read to children just about anywhere, so they can nourish their hearts and minds.”

Just as Read to Me was gifted to me, I recommend that it be gifted to any child from birth and beyond. I am confident that the book will be a first selection for many months and years to come, and passed on to others.

This independent book review was offered for #MCBD2024 and #ReadYourWorld. Since 2010, Multicultural Children’s Book Day, a non-profit children’s literacy initiative working effortlessly go get multicultural books into the hands of children and educators.
